Volkanovski’s Impressive Weight Cut for UFC Rematch Against Makhachev

Volkanovski’s Impressive Weight Cut for UFC Rematch Against Makhachev

When it comes to stepping up and seizing an opportunity, Alexander Volkanovski has proven that he is more than willing to do whatever it takes. With less than a week’s notice, he agreed to fight Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title in a highly anticipated rematch at UFC 294. But what made this decision even more impressive was the fact that Volkanovski was over 25 pounds above the required weight limit just a day before accepting the fight.

Weight cutting is a common practice in combat sports, where athletes aim to shed pounds in order to compete in a lower weight class. However, the process can be physically and mentally demanding, requiring strict dieting and vigorous training. For Volkanovski, who normally competes as a featherweight at 145 pounds, cutting down to the lightweight limit of 155 pounds seemed like an impossible task.

Despite the daunting challenge ahead, Volkanovski did not back down. In a YouTube video, he revealed that he weighed around 181 pounds just a day before receiving the call from the UFC. This meant that he needed to lose at least 26 pounds within a short period of time. While most fighters would have deemed it impossible, Volkanovski remained confident, attributing the excessive weight to “water weight”.

Volkanovski dedicated himself to an intense weight-cutting regimen, pushing his body to the limits. Within two days, he had already dropped down to 172 pounds, and by Monday, he was around 168 pounds after multiple training sessions. What made his achievement even more remarkable was that despite carrying the extra weight, he managed to break all his jumping records at his Freestyle Fighting Gym training center.

One of the key factors in Volkanovski’s successful weight cut was his ability to listen to his body. Despite being heavier than usual, he trusted his instincts and believed that his body knew how to adapt. “My body knows, man,” he expressed confidently. This level of self-awareness and trust played a crucial role in helping him achieve his desired weight.

Volkanovski’s rematch against Makhachev comes after their closely contested fight at UFC 284, where Makhachev emerged as the victor via unanimous decision. This rematch presents Volkanovski with an opportunity to reclaim the title and prove his dominance in the division. ESPN currently ranks Volkanovski as the number one pound-for-pound fighter, with Makhachev following closely behind at number two.

Alexander Volkanovski’s impressive weight cut showcases his unwavering determination and commitment to his craft. By shedding over 25 pounds in just a few days, he has demonstrated his willingness to take risks and seize opportunities. As he steps into the octagon for the rematch against Islam Makhachev, Volkanovski’s remarkable feat serves as a testament to the mental and physical fortitude needed in the world of professional mixed martial arts.
