Un-Bee-lievable: Bees Interrupt Tennis Match at Indian Wells

In a bizarre turn of events at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, a quarterfinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev was disrupted by a swarm of bees. The match was suspended just 19 minutes in, with Alcaraz serving tied at 1-1, as the bees buzzed around the players.

As the bees attached themselves to the overhead spider camera that traverses the court, a brave man with no protective covering stepped in with a vacuum to clean them off. The players were forced to leave the court during the delay, unsure of when they would be able to resume play.

Return to the Court

Upon their return to the court, the chair umpire warned the players that there were still some bees lingering around. Zverev, with his trademark sense of humor, joked that he was okay to play on his side of the court. The crowd cheered as the bee vacuumer returned with a spray bottle, continuing his mission to rid the area of pesky bees.

The man with the vacuum became an unexpected hero as he sprayed the surrounding walls and even posed for selfies with fans. Alcaraz and Zverev couldn’t help but laugh as they watched him wander the stands, ensuring that the area was safe for play to resume.

Resuming Play

Despite Alcaraz’s ongoing concerns about a potential bee swarm on his side of the court, an ATP Tour supervisor encouraged him to give it a go during the warmup. After a delay of one hour and 48 minutes, the match finally resumed much to the relief of the players and spectators.

Tournament owner Larry Ellison and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates were among those watching the match from Ellison’s box, witnessing the extraordinary bee-related interruption. Despite the unexpected turn of events, the match continued, providing entertainment both on and off the court.

The swarm of bees may have caused a significant disruption to the quarterfinal match at Indian Wells, but it also added a touch of unexpected excitement and humor to the proceedings. The players, officials, and spectators all handled the situation with grace and good spirits, showing that even in the face of unexpected challenges, the show must go on.
