The USTA Takes Steps to Safeguard Players from Abuse

The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) has recently taken significant steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its players. In an email sent by Lew Sherr, the CEO and executive director of the USTA, he informed the USTA board of directors, staff, and volunteers that the organization has enlisted the services of two lawyers from Debevoise & Plimpton LLP to review their safeguarding policies and procedures. The aim of this review is to prevent incidents of sexual misconduct and other forms of abuse within the sport.

The decision to conduct this review comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed against the USTA by tennis player Kylie McKenzie in 2022. McKenzie alleged that the governing body failed to protect her from a coach who sexually abused her at one of its training centers when she was 19 years old. Although the review does not pertain to any specific allegations, the USTA recognizes the importance of addressing the concerns raised and implementing more robust safeguarding practices.

The USTA’s review will focus on multiple aspects of safeguarding, including prevention, reporting, and response mechanisms for cases of abuse and sexual misconduct. By engaging the expertise of David O’Neil and Mary Beth Hogan from Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, the USTA aims to ensure that its policies and procedures adequately safeguard players, and provide appropriate channels for reporting and responding to instances of abuse.

The USTA’s commitment to athlete safety is evident in its decision to conduct this comprehensive review. The organization acknowledges that maintaining a safe and secure environment for players is of paramount importance in order to foster a positive and nurturing atmosphere for the sport. By proactively addressing potential vulnerabilities, the USTA is taking crucial steps towards creating an environment where athletes can thrive and feel protected.

The USTA’s efforts to review its policies and procedures demonstrate the organization’s commitment to transparency and accountability. By engaging external legal experts, the USTA is ensuring an unbiased and thorough assessment of its safeguarding practices. This approach not only shows a willingness to evolve and improve but also sends a clear message that the USTA takes the safety of its players seriously.

As the review progresses, it is expected that the USTA will make any necessary adjustments to its policies and procedures based on the recommendations provided by the legal experts. This commitment to continuous improvement will help strengthen the USTA’s safeguarding mechanisms and ensure a safer environment for all players. By actively addressing the issue of sexual misconduct and abuse, the USTA is sending a strong message that it is dedicated to protecting its athletes and maintaining the integrity of the sport.
