The poor behavior of journalists at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast has caught the attention of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and prompted them to issue a new set of guidelines. The actions of journalists have overshadowed the on-pitch drama, with incidents of abuse, fighting, and near-nudity making headlines from the press box.
After consulting with the local police and Ivorian authorities, CAF has decided to take steps to address what they consider “unprofessional and unbecoming behavior” by journalists. A statement issued by CAF emphasizes the need for journalists to observe professional standards and announces stricter consequences for those who violate them.
CAF has made it clear that any media practitioner involved in “wild celebrations and abuses of other media colleagues” will have their accreditation immediately removed and face expulsion from the tournament. Journalists who use vulgar language against coaches, players, or their peers will also have their accreditation withdrawn.
In an effort to maintain a professional environment, CAF has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to fighting among journalists. Any person who engages in physical altercations will face severe consequences. The use of vulgar language in the media areas, including against coaches, players, or other journalists, is strictly prohibited.
As part of the clampdown, CAF has banned live streaming in the mixed zone, the use of drones, and any unauthorized media filming within the stadium. These measures aim to ensure that journalists focus on their professional duties and do not disrupt the tournament’s proceedings.
The incidents of misbehavior by journalists have been concerning throughout the tournament. During Ghana’s match against Mozambique, accredited journalists shouted abuse at players in the mixed zone and heckled former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton. Similar clashes between media packs occurred during the Senegal-Guinea and Morocco-South Africa matches. The Ivory Coast players also faced barracking from reporters following their defeat to Equatorial Guinea.
The behavior of an accredited Ivorian reporter during his team’s victory over Senegal appears to have been the final straw. Footage circulated showing the journalist engaging in a near-naked dance in the media tribune. The International Sports Press Association expressed their disappointment, stating that the media workspaces have turned into a “boxing ring” or a “dancefloor” rather than professional zones.
As a result of these incidents, media access to Nigeria’s quarterfinal against Angola was strictly regulated. Only a maximum of 250 journalists were admitted to the media tribune, and access for photographers was also limited. These measures were put in place to ensure a more controlled and respectful environment for reporting.
