The Struggles of Jose Mourinho’s Roma: A Rocky Start to the Season

Roma coach Jose Mourinho, renowned for his managerial prowess, is currently facing a challenging time with his team languishing in 16th place in Serie A. With only one win in their opening six league games, this has been dubbed as “the worst start to a season” in Mourinho’s career. The Portuguese tactician openly expressed his dismay, stating, “It’s also the worst start of my career, but I think it was also the first time in Roma’s history that we played two European finals in a row.”

One significant issue troubling Roma is their defensive performance. They currently possess the third worst defensive record in Serie A this season, having conceded a total of 11 goals in just six matches. This weakness was glaringly evident in their most recent defeat against Genoa, where they suffered a resounding 4-1 loss. Mourinho acknowledged the team’s defensive struggles, emphasizing, “It’s the group we have and it’s with this group that we have to get out of. There is no other story, there is no market, no one comes in, no one leaves, it is the squad we have with its qualities and its problems.”

As the team’s disappointing performances persist, Mourinho revealed the emotional toll it takes on him. Not only does he feel the weight of responsibility due to his personal relationship with Roma fans, but he also experiences a deep sense of disappointment on a general level. Mourinho expressed, “You can cry internally because it hurts your heart, also because of my relationship with Roma fans it affects me even more because it is not a personal issue but also a general one that makes me feel this way.”

While Mourinho’s start at Roma may be disheartening, it is important to remember his track record of overcoming adversity. Throughout his storied career, he has faced difficult times and emerged victorious. One notable example is his tenure at Manchester United during the 2016-2017 season. Despite a slow start, Mourinho guided the team to win the EFL Cup final and the Europa League. This serves as a testament to his ability to rally his players and achieve success even after facing early setbacks.

Looking ahead, Roma has crucial fixtures on the horizon. They will face Frosinone in their upcoming home game on Sunday, followed by a Europa League group match against Servette on October 5th. Mourinho emphasized the importance of regrouping and focusing on the task at hand, stating, “But tomorrow we are there working, the next game will be three points, not six or eight. But it becomes a very important game for us.”

Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Roma has undoubtedly faced significant challenges, with the team’s poor start to the season and defensive struggles taking a toll on their performance. However, history has shown Mourinho’s ability to turn things around, and with upcoming fixtures on the horizon, there is still ample opportunity for Roma to rise from their current position and rediscover their winning form.
