The Future of UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones

UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has recently expressed his desire to face former champion Stipe Miocic next, rather than engaging in a unification bout with interim champion Tom Aspinall. Despite Aspinall’s impressive performances in the Octagon, Jones seems determined to stick to his original plans and face the man with all the accolades, Miocic. Jones emphasized, “I am not changing my plans for anyone. Stipe is over there as the best heavyweight ever working his ass off.”

Tom Aspinall, who claimed the interim championship last November with a first-round knockout, has been calling for a unification fight with Jones. However, Jones remains unmoved by Aspinall’s requests, stating, “I am not interested in anybody not named Stipe Miocic.” Despite Aspinall’s impressive record of finishing all seven of his opponents in the UFC, Jones seems fixed on his goal of facing Miocic next and giving him what he wants.

Since his last fight in March 2023, where he made his heavyweight debut and defeated Ciryl Gane for the vacant championship, Jon Jones has been preparing for his return to the Octagon. Although there is no set timetable for his next fight, Jones has mentioned that he is in the early stages of getting back into fight shape. His focus remains on facing Miocic next, as he believes Miocic is the best heavyweight ever and deserves the opportunity to challenge him.

Jones expressed some frustration with the UFC’s handling of the situation surrounding UFC 295, where he was initially scheduled to face Miocic but had to pull out due to injury. The confusion arose when the UFC elevated the Aspinall-Pavlovich fight to the main event and made it for the interim title. Jones attributed the confusion to the UFC’s decision, stating, “UFC did what they had to do to save the event. But I do agree with you, it definitely confused a bunch of UK fans, got them entitled thinking their boy really is the champion.”

While there is speculation that Aspinall may defend the interim title at UFC 304, Jones seems solely focused on facing Miocic next. Despite the possibility of a unification bout with Aspinall down the line, Jones reiterated his commitment to sticking to his original plans. As he prepares for his return to the Octagon, Jones remains confident in his abilities and looks forward to facing the challenges that lie ahead in his career.

Jon Jones’ determination to face Stipe Miocic next showcases his unwavering focus and dedication to his goals in the UFC. Despite the potential for exciting matchups with fighters like Tom Aspinall, Jones remains steadfast in his decision to prioritize facing the best in the heavyweight division. As fans eagerly await Jones’ return to the Octagon, the anticipation for his future matchups continues to grow.
