Tragedy struck the baseball community as Jim Poole, a former big league pitcher, passed away at the age of 57 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Poole will be remembered for his contributions on the mound and his unwavering passion for the game.
Jim Poole’s journey in professional baseball began when he made his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1990. Over the span of his 11-season career, Poole showcased his skills with several teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, and San Francisco Giants.
Primarily a left-handed reliever, Poole made a total of 431 appearances out of the bullpen. Throughout his career, he achieved a 22-12 record with four saves and a 4.31 ERA. Poole’s talent earned him a place in the World Series stage in 1995, as the Cleveland Indians faced off against the Atlanta Braves.
During the tension-filled 1995 World Series, Poole’s moment in the spotlight arrived in Game 6. With the Indians needing a win to force a decisive Game 7, Poole stepped onto the mound in relief. He displayed his composure by striking out the formidable Fred McGriff, ending a threatening inning. However, the following frame brought disappointment as David Justice’s home run proved to be the deciding run in the Braves’ championship-clinching victory.
Although the World Series outcome was disheartening, Poole continued to exhibit his versatility in the postseason. In 10 playoff appearances, he demonstrated his ability to handle pressure, yielding merely four hits and two runs in 7 1/3 innings, with nine strikeouts.
His contributions were not limited to his on-field achievements. Beyond his playing days, Poole remained dedicated to the sport he loved. As a fundraiser and supporter of the Georgia Tech baseball program, Poole exemplified the values of a true Tech man. He returned to his alma mater after retirement and served as a pitching coach at Johns Creek High School, further contributing to the development of young athletes.

Even after his ALS diagnosis in 2021, Poole did not let the disease define him. Instead, he used his platform to raise awareness for ALS, hosting an ALS Awareness Day during the 2022 baseball season. The Georgia Tech baseball team honored him by wearing Jim Poole shirts, showcasing their support for Poole’s mission.
