MLS Implements New Rule Changes to Enhance Game Flow

Major League Soccer (MLS) has recently announced its plans to implement two rule changes for the upcoming 2024 season. These changes aim to reduce stoppages in play and create a more fluid and exciting game. Alongside these alterations, there have been minor updates to roster guidelines and other on-field rule tweaks. In this article, we will examine these rule changes and their potential impact on the league.

One of the newly implemented rule changes in MLS is the off-field treatment rule. Under this rule, any player who remains down with a suspected injury for at least 15 seconds must be taken off the field by a medical crew and receive treatment on the sideline for a minimum of two minutes. However, exceptions will be made when the injuries result from fouls that warrant yellow or red cards.

The introduction of this rule follows a series of trials conducted in the MLS Next Pro developmental league. According to the league, these trials resulted in a significant reduction in stoppages, dropping from an average of six per match to only 1.22. This change aims to minimize time-wasting tactics and ensure that injured players receive proper medical attention without disrupting the flow of the game.

Another rule change set to take effect in the 2024 season is the timed substitution rule. Under this rule, players will now have a maximum of 10 seconds to exit the field when being substituted. Failure to do so will result in their replacement being delayed until the next stoppage, with an additional minute added to the wait time. It is worth noting that this rule does not apply to goalkeepers or injury substitutions.

In the previous MLS Next Pro season, the league reported that out of over 3,200 substitutions, only 10 players failed to adhere to the timed substitution rule and received the one-minute penalty. This suggests that players have already adapted to this change during the trial period, and the impact on the game has been minimal.

Amidst the significant rule changes, several minor updates to the roster guidelines have also been announced. These updates are unlikely to have a profound impact on the league or be noticeable to most fans. The changes include a reduction in discovery lists from seven to five players, allowing transfer fees from designated player transfers or loans to be used as general allocation money, and establishing residency or appearing for an immigrant visa interview as requirements to qualify as a domestic player.

While some speculated that MLS might take additional steps to enhance team competitiveness with Liga MX, Commissioner Don Garber dispelled such notions, stating that the league’s current initiatives have been effective. However, he did hint at potential streamlining of rules in the future, taking into consideration the growing fanbase and international interest in MLS matches.

Apart from the aforementioned alterations, MLS has also approved other minor changes. Stoppage time will now be displayed in the stadiums, making it easier for fans to track match progress. VAR decisions will be announced by referees to improve transparency and understanding of the video review process. Furthermore, when opposing players suffer simultaneous head injuries requiring off-field treatment, both players will return to play at the same time to maintain fairness.

Overall, the rule changes implemented by MLS for the 2024 season aim to enhance game flow, reduce stoppages, and create a more dynamic and entertaining experience for fans. While the off-field treatment rule and timed substitution rule may face some initial adjustments from players and teams, the trial period in MLS Next Pro suggests a smooth transition. Additionally, the minor updates to roster guidelines and other rule tweaks are unlikely to have a noticeable impact on the league. As MLS continues to grow and attract a broader international audience, it remains open to evolving its rules to meet the evolving needs of the game.
