Manchester United Eyeing Wolves Coach Gary O’Neil for New Coaching Set-Up

Manchester United are reportedly interested in speaking to Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil about a potential role in a new coaching structure at Old Trafford. With the recent takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, led by INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, United is looking to build a new coaching team with a head coach at the helm.

While the final decision on Erik ten Hag’s future as manager is still pending, sources have revealed that United have already evaluated options such as England manager Gareth Southgate, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank as potential successors. O’Neil, who took over as Wolves’ manager last August, has impressed with his performance, guiding the team into contention for European qualification this season.

Sources have confirmed to ESPN that United has expressed interest in O’Neil and are keen to discuss his intentions. Although the specific role that might be offered to O’Neil is not yet known, United is also considering strengthening their entire coaching staff. O’Neil, who signed a three-year contract with Wolves last summer, could potentially require compensation if he chooses to join Manchester United.

Gary O’Neil, a former midfielder for clubs like Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, and West Ham United, began his coaching career with Liverpool U-18s under the guidance of Michael Edwards, the club’s sporting director. O’Neil’s experience working with Edwards dates back to their time at Portsmouth in the early 2000s during the club’s stint in the Premier League.

Overall, it is evident that Manchester United is looking to revamp their coaching set-up under the new ownership of the INEOS group. The interest in Gary O’Neil showcases the club’s ambition to bring in fresh talent and expertise to drive success on the pitch. As discussions unfold, it will be interesting to see how O’Neil’s potential transition to Old Trafford could shape the future of Manchester United’s coaching staff and ultimately impact the team’s performance in the Premier League.
