In a devastating turn of events, former Major League Baseball player Danny Serafini and Samantha Scott have been arrested in connection with a Lake Tahoe-area attack that resulted in the death of Robert Gary Spohr and left his wife, Wendy Wood, in critical condition. The arrests were made after a two-year investigation, with Serafini and Scott taken into custody separately, hundreds of miles apart in Las Vegas and northwest of Reno. It is reported that they knew both the victims and each other, adding to the complexity of the case. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has announced that Serafini and Scott will be extradited to California to face charges.
The incident occurred in an unincorporated community in California, near the shores of Lake Tahoe. Video surveillance from the victims’ home showed a man wearing a gray hoodie, face covering, and backpack approaching the property hours before the attack. Another video captured the same individual walking up the driveway. Following a 911 call, deputies arrived at the scene to find Spohr shot once and Wood shot at least twice. Sadly, Wood ultimately succumbed to her injuries a year later.
Danny Serafini, a left-handed pitcher, had a career in Major League Baseball that spanned several teams. He was selected as the 26th overall pick in the 1992 draft by the Minnesota Twins. Serafini pitched for the Twins for three seasons before moving on to the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds. He concluded his career with the Colorado Rockies in 2007. Throughout his time in the league, Serafini appeared in 104 games and accumulated a record of 15-16 with a 6.04 ERA.
