The Delayed Release of Luis Díaz’s Father by Colombian Rebel Group

The Delayed Release of Luis Díaz’s Father by Colombian Rebel Group

In a shocking incident, Luis Díaz’s parents, Cilenis Marulanda and Luis Manuel Díaz, were kidnapped by armed men while driving in La Guajira province on Oct. 28. While Marulanda was lucky to be freed within hours, the release of Díaz’s father has been delayed by the National Liberation Army (ELN), a Colombian rebel group. The reason behind the kidnapping remains unclear, but sources suggest that the ELN, known for funding its operations through illicit means such as kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking, might be involved.

Colombia’s most radical leftist guerrilla group, the ELN, has faced criticism for its violent actions throughout the years. Despite being engaged in a ceasefire and peace talks with the government, the group continues to engage in activities that violate the agreement. The government reported that the ELN was responsible for the kidnapping of Díaz’s parents, further highlighting the group’s defiance and disregard for the peace process.

The ELN had initially stated that Luis Manuel Díaz would be released “as soon as possible.” However, the presence of Colombia’s security forces in the region has hindered the release of Díaz’s father. Military operations, including flyovers, troop deployment, megaphone broadcasts, and combing operations, have created a highly militarized zone, making it difficult for the ELN to safely release the captive. The group’s statement, seen by Reuters, suggests that if the military operations continue, the release will be further delayed, raising risks for Díaz’s father.

Interior Minister Luis Fernando Velasco has expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that it is a “very serious” violation of the ceasefire agreement. The kidnapping not only undermines the progress made during the peace talks but also disrupts the delicate balance in a country struggling to end a six-decade internal armed conflict that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

Luis Díaz’s Message of Hope

In an inspiring show of support for his father, Luis Díaz, playing for Liverpool in the Premier League, scored a late equalizer against Luton Town on Sunday. In a heartwarming gesture, Díaz lifted his shirt to reveal a message that read: “LIBERTAD PARA PAPA” (“Freedom for Dad”). This act reflects the pain and desperation felt by Díaz and his family, as they await the safe return of his father.

A Call for Action

The delayed release of Luis Manuel Díaz sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by Colombia in its pursuit of peace. The ELN’s involvement in illicit activities and its refusal to abide by ceasefire agreements pose significant obstacles to achieving lasting stability. It is crucial for both the government and international communities to work together in addressing the issues surrounding rebel groups, fostering dialogue, and finding effective solutions to secure peace and ensure the safety of individuals like Luis Manuel Díaz and his family.
